You can text your ChatGPT dot from Google Messages on Android using RCS. Once the feature is available to your account and your phone number is verified, you can message your dot, share photos or voice messages, and receive updates in a one-to-one conversation.
There’s one qualification to check first: dot texting is currently a limited beta for some ChatGPT Pro users in the United States. Having Google Messages and RCS enabled does not automatically give your ChatGPT account access.
This guide explains how ChatGPT dots work with RCS, how to set them up, what you can do with them, and what to check if texting is unavailable.
Availability checked: November 2, 2026. OpenAI is gradually rolling out dot texting, so eligibility and features may change. Check OpenAI’s latest dot documentation for updates.
What are ChatGPT dots in Google Messages?
A dot is OpenAI’s personal AI agent in ChatGPT. It can help with tasks, maintain context across conversations, and provide updates as it works.
With dot texting enabled, you can communicate with your dot through your phone’s messaging app. On Android, that means using RCS in Google Messages. OpenAI also supports texting a dot through iMessage on compatible Apple devices.
The terms in this search refer to different parts of the experience:
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT dot | Your personal AI agent from OpenAI |
| RCS | The messaging standard used to communicate with your dot on Android |
| Google Messages | The Android messaging app where you send and receive the messages |
Here, “dot” refers to the AI agent—not the animated typing indicator that may appear in an RCS conversation.
Who can use ChatGPT dot texting with RCS?
According to OpenAI, dot texting is currently available in beta to a limited number of ChatGPT Pro users in the United States. It is not supported in Business or Enterprise workspaces.
To use it with Google Messages, you need:
- A ChatGPT account that has access to a dot and the Texting feature.
- An eligible ChatGPT Pro account in the United States.
- An Android phone with Google Messages and RCS chats enabled.
- A phone number that you can verify with OpenAI.
- A working mobile data or Wi-Fi connection for RCS.
Dots themselves are available under broader eligibility rules than dot texting. If you have access to a dot but do not see Texting in its profile, OpenAI says texting is not yet available for your account. Check again later in case the rollout reaches you. Source: OpenAI
How to set up ChatGPT dot texting in Google Messages
Setup has two parts: first, confirm that RCS is active on your Android phone; then connect and verify your phone number in ChatGPT.
Step 1: Turn on RCS chats in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Tap Messages settings.
- Select RCS chats.
- Turn on RCS chats, if it is not already enabled.
- Check the status on the same screen. Connected means RCS is active.
If you see Connecting, Google says your phone number is still being verified. If RCS is unsupported or disabled by your carrier, follow Google’s RCS troubleshooting guidance.
Google notes that repeatedly turning RCS on and off can affect group chats, so use its troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly toggling the setting. Source: Google Messages
Step 2: Connect your phone number to your dot
You can connect your phone from the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app, or desktop web:
- Open your dot’s profile in ChatGPT.
- Select Texting.
- Enter your phone number.
- Select Send confirmation text.
- Enter the code you receive.
- Select Verify phone number.
After verification, follow the instructions shown by ChatGPT to text your dot from your phone. Use the number and conversation provided through the official setup flow.
If Texting does not appear in your dot’s profile, the feature is not yet available for your account. Turning on RCS alone will not unlock it. Source: OpenAI
Step 3: Start a conversation over RCS
Once setup is complete, open the dot conversation in Google Messages and send a short message. For example:
“Hi! Can you give me three ideas for a quick vegetarian dinner?”
You can then continue the conversation by providing more detail or changing your request.
Check that the conversation uses RCS. OpenAI says ordinary SMS is not supported for dot conversations. If you send an SMS from your connected number, you may receive an automatic reply asking you to use RCS, iMessage, or the ChatGPT app instead.
What can you do with your ChatGPT dot through RCS?
OpenAI says dot texting supports text, photos, and voice messages in a one-to-one conversation. Your dot can also send updates, and you can ask it to use texting for matters that need your attention while keeping routine updates in ChatGPT. Source: OpenAI
Here are a few ways you might use it. These are illustrative prompts; actual results depend on your dot’s capabilities, permissions, and connected apps.
Ask a question by text
Send a question when you want an answer without opening a separate app.
Example prompt:
“I’m visiting Seattle for two days. Suggest a simple itinerary with indoor options if it rains.”
You can follow up with your budget, interests, or travel dates to refine the answer.
Share a photo
Send a photo with a question about its contents.
Example prompt:
“What ingredients are listed on this package? Please flag anything you can’t read clearly.”
For important decisions, check the original information yourself. Image interpretation can be wrong or incomplete.
Send a voice message
If it’s easier to speak than type, send your dot a voice message with your request. You might describe an idea, ask a question, or add context to an existing task.
Ask for task updates
You can ask your dot to send you an update when a task needs your attention.
Example prompt:
“Research a few options for my upcoming trip. Text me when you need me to choose between them.”
A dot may need connected apps, additional permissions, or your approval for some tasks. If approval is required, OpenAI says your dot can send you a link to review the request in ChatGPT.
ChatGPT dot vs. Gemini in Google Messages
ChatGPT dot and Gemini can both be relevant to someone using Google Messages, but they are different AI products.
| ChatGPT dot | Gemini in Google Messages | |
|---|---|---|
| Provider | OpenAI | |
| How you use it | Text your dot through RCS after connecting your phone in ChatGPT | Use Google’s Gemini experience in Google Messages, where available |
| Account | Eligible ChatGPT account | Google account and applicable Gemini eligibility |
| Current dot texting availability | Limited beta for some US ChatGPT Pro users | Separate Google availability and eligibility rules |
You do not enable dot texting by turning on Gemini. For dot texting, start in your dot’s profile in ChatGPT, then use Google Messages as the RCS messaging app.
Is texting a ChatGPT dot private and secure?
Before sending sensitive information, understand how the conversation is handled.
Your dot cannot read your other text conversations just because you enable texting. OpenAI says connecting your number only lets you message your dot; it does not give the dot or OpenAI access to the rest of your text conversations.
However, OpenAI also states that texts to your dot are not end-to-end encrypted between you and your dot, even when you use RCS. OpenAI uses a third-party messaging provider, Linq, to process messages on their way to OpenAI.
According to OpenAI, Linq does not retain message contents after delivery, although it may retain limited delivery information such as timestamps and delivery status. OpenAI stores the texts as part of your dot’s conversations in ChatGPT. Review OpenAI’s dot privacy information before sharing information you consider sensitive.
Your dot may also receive memories and recent conversation context from ChatGPT, depending on your settings. You can review how memory works in OpenAI’s dots privacy FAQ.
ChatGPT dot RCS not working? Troubleshooting checklist
I can’t find “Texting” in my dot’s profile
OpenAI says that if Texting is missing, the feature is not available for your account yet. Dot texting is rolling out to a limited number of US Pro users.
Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and check the profile again later. You can continue using your dot in ChatGPT if your account has dot access.
Google Messages says RCS is connecting
Open Google Messages → Profile picture → Messages settings → RCS chats and check the status.
Google says Connecting means your phone number is being verified. If you see a connection error or the status does not resolve, follow Google’s RCS troubleshooting guide, including checking that your phone has internet access and can receive SMS.
My message is being sent as SMS
Dot texting requires RCS or iMessage; SMS is not supported for the conversation. Check your RCS status in Google Messages and your internet connection, then use RCS when it is available.
You can use your dot in the ChatGPT app while you troubleshoot RCS. Avoid assuming that an SMS fallback will reach your dot.
My verification code didn’t arrive
Check that you entered the phone number you intend to connect and that the phone can receive the confirmation text. Follow the prompts in ChatGPT to retry if an option is available.
If the problem continues, consult OpenAI’s dot help page and your carrier’s messaging support. Do not share your verification code with anyone.
My dot isn’t sending the updates I expected
Check the task in ChatGPT and confirm what you asked the dot to do. You can also tell it which updates you want by text and which can stay in ChatGPT.
Some actions require approval or access to connected apps. If your dot sends an approval request, review it in ChatGPT before expecting the action to proceed.
